On the night of Christmas Eve, a family is settling down to sleep when the father is disturbed by noises on their lawn. Nicholas eventually was set to music and has been recorded by many artists. Before the poem gained wide popularity, American ideas had varied considerably about Saint Nicholas and other Christmastide visitors. It has had a massive effect on the history of Christmas gift-giving. The poem has been called "arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American" and is largely responsible for some of the conceptions of Santa Claus from the mid-nineteenth century to today. ![]() Nicholas in 1823 and later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, who claimed authorship in 1837. So much so that I’d managed to read seventeen out of the twenty-six books she’s published within her career in five months. There was a time following a stint at summer camp-where I was first introduced to her stories-that her novels were virtually all I wanted to read. ![]() My favorite author, whose books I will read without fail, is Colleen Hoover. ![]() ![]() The two sequel novels, The Burning World and The Living, follow Julie and R as they discover more of R's past, and as R 'recovers' from his death. The prequel novel to Warm Bodies, entitled The New Hunger, follows protagonist (and eventual zombie love interest) Julie as her family tries to survive in a newly-apocalyptic America. ![]() As Marion mentions above, that is only a small fraction of the series, so there is plenty more that could be covered in a TV adaptation, even if it cannot bring back Hoult and Palmer. After reading this short, early piece of Dostoevsky it is nice to start recognizing its influence on other authors and their work. While patterns still do emerge in translations, they are fragmented and seem often like poor reflections of what the original must be. His Gogol-inspired novella plays with language, poetry, puns and double entendres are hard to translate adequately (go with Pevear and Volokhonsky for the poetry and avoid Constance Garnett).
