![]() ![]() It's cheering - isn't it? - the way Playboy upholds the primacy of the erotic canon over the claims of postmodern challengers like Roxana Shirazi's salacious memoir, The Last Living Slut.įor a translator, even one as renowned as Lydia Davis, Flaubert, the great apostle of le mot juste - using exactly the right word - must surely be the Matterhorn of authors. ![]() "The most scandalous novel of all time!" hisses a headline on Playboy' s cover. No, what's wresting attention away from the latest lineup of hydroponically enhanced models is an excerpt from Lydia Davis' new translation of Gustave Flaubert's masterpiece. For the "original desperate housewife," as she's been called, the knowledge that she's the object of the collective male gaze might have relieved some of the dismal boredom that characterized so much of Emma Bovary's provincial life. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Despite social convention, the only future she can see for herself is that of a doctor. Frankly, the ending simultaneously surprised and disappointed me. Additionally, due to the nature of the epistolary novel, some of her actions are not entirely revealed, thus leaving the ending a bit confusing. The more about Sarah is revealed, the less sympathetic she becomes. The book therefore starts out strong, but falters more and more the further toward the end it gets. Perhaps this is partly because there’s a Stepford-wife like quality to Sarah’s past life, and her current life is so over the top from anything most modern Americans experience. Whether she’s discussing the commune or her past life on the North Shore, the letters are truly fascinating. Sarah’s letters compel the reader to get through them as quickly as possible. This book certainly contains all three elements. Also, I’ve always been fascinated by communes and cults. I found Updike’s more famous novel, The Three Witches of Eastwick, endlessly entertaining. ![]() ![]() ![]() I was intrigued by this book for multiple reasons. Gradually through the letters both her past and her experiences in the commune are revealed. Letters, both hand-written and recorded onto tapes, tell the story of Sarah, a North Shore housewife of a wealthy Massachusetts General Hospital doctor who one day in 1986 decides to go and join a commune in the Arizona desert. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you're a fan of Amy Lane then you already know how well she writes love, pain, angst and redemption stories. ![]() Earnest, brave, and self-deprecating, Shane seems to speak Mikhail's language, and no one is more surprised than Mikhail to find that keeping promises is Shane's best talent of all. It is meant for those who approach life with humour, who believe that children can differentiate between good and bad with the help of their guardians, and who understand why children’s fiction needn’t always be moralising.
